Open-Defecation-Free Village

Dignity for women, apart from health benefits for all

The poor villagers do not have enough finances to build the toilet on their own. Also, the size of the toilet is too small or the quality of construction is not good enough.

This has been one of the most satisfying projects for us. We overcame a lot of challenges during the process, which involved the following:

  • Massive door-to-door campaign and small community meetings to educate people
  • Preparing educational posters and material in local language
  • Convincing villagers to construct the toilet
  • Supervising construction of new toilets and repairs of some old toilets
  • Government contribution of Rs 12,000 per toilet
  • Friends and our contribution of Rs 4500 per toilet
  • Villagers contribution of Rs 1500 worth of labor
  • Supervising construction of the toilets
  • Making plans to ensure proper usage subsequently
  • Building a bathroom also, by increasing the size
  • Including wash basin and soap holder
  • Plastering of the walls, painting walls and improving quality of the door
  • Finally, construction of 600+ good quality functional toilets with bathrooms
