Digital literacy Revolution in Rural Community

During my December 2012 trip, the kids showed lot of curiosity and started playing with my laptop computer. The enthusiasm forced me to think about computer literacy. A nonfunctional computer lab with dust collecting on eleven computers in the Government High School was immediately remodeled. New computers donated by a board member and a projector were added. With trainers from outside, several successful camps in basic computer literacy were conducted to train about 400 school kids and 80 village youth in early 2013.

Two young women started running the computer center after the training. Another youth was hired by a software company which promised to provide training and employment on an ongoing basis to the village youth. A bright young lady joined the trainer’s team. School children now have daily sessions.

We now have added about 100 computers in the village along with tablets, printers, scanners and copiers. Computer literacy program has spread to elementary schools. Villagers are encouraged to visit the center, to raise awareness of the program.

This successful initiative has served as one of the catalysts for eventual socio-economic development in the village.
